ALL OF THE LIGHTS BUT NONE OF THE JOY

We are excited to present the first window art installation by Dr. Nyein Chan Aung & Thinn Thinn Khine:
“ALL OF THE LIGHTS BUT NONE OF THE JOY”.

Since the Myanmar Military Coup in 2021, Burmese people have not had the heart to celebrate any festivals. This is leading to further separation from our culture.

Every year around October and November, we traditionally celebrate Thadingyut and Thazaungdaing. Our communities gather and visit our families’ homes to express generosity and pay respect to our elders.

Now, in Myanmar, while the Military Junta and other violators may still illuminate the lanterns and lights, there is a lack of peace, joy and the celebration spirit.

This installation is dedicated to our son, Yosone Aung, who was born in October 2020 in Australia. Although he has never set foot in Burma, Yosone, affectionately known as Yo Yo, innately longs for all things Burmese.

The installation features lanterns suspended from driftwood and stones, symbolizing our collective hope despite the ongoing tragedy in our homeland.
